🧠 What do “So do I” and “Neither do I” mean?
We use “So do I” to agree with a positive statement.
We use “Neither do I” (or “Nor do I”) to agree with a negative statement.
They both mean “me too” or “me neither”, but in grammatically correct English.
✅ Structure
So / Neither + auxiliary verb (do, did, have, will, etc.) + subject
Use the same auxiliary/modal verb as in the first sentence. That’s the key!
✅ Agreeing with Positive Statements (So + Aux + I)
Original sentence | Agreement | Explanation |
---|---|---|
I like chocolate. | So do I. | Present simple → use do |
She studies English. | So do I. | Present simple → do again |
I went to the concert. | So did I. | Past simple → use did |
They’ve seen that movie. | So have I. | Present perfect → use have |
He’ll come tomorrow. | So will I. | Future → use will |
I can speak French. | So can I. | Modal verb → use can |
We would love to go. | So would I. | Conditional → use would |
🚫 Agreeing with Negative Statements (Neither + Aux + I)
Original sentence | Agreement | Explanation |
---|---|---|
I don’t like coffee. | Neither do I. | Present simple negative → do |
She doesn’t drive. | Neither do I. | Present simple → do |
I didn’t enjoy the film. | Neither did I. | Past simple → did |
They haven’t finished the task. | Neither have I. | Present perfect → have |
He won’t go. | Neither will I. | Future → will |
I can’t sing. | Neither can I. | Modal verb → can |
We wouldn’t do that. | Neither would I. | Conditional → would |
🟡 You can also use Nor instead of Neither:
Nor do I. / Nor will I. / Nor have I.
It’s more formal but correct.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
🚫 So I do
✅ So do I
➡️ The auxiliary comes first, then the subject.
🚫 Neither I do
✅ Neither do I
➡️ Never put “I” before the auxiliary.
🚫 So do I (after a negative)
✅ I don’t like cheese. → ❌ So do I → ✅ Neither do I
