💬 What Is the Subjunctive in English?

The subjunctive in English is a special verb form that we use in certain situations like:

  • suggestions
  • recommendations
  • requests or demands
  • expressions of importance or necessity
  • and sometimes, hypothetical ideas

You’ll often see it after phrases like:
👉 I suggest that…
👉 It’s important that…
👉 They recommend that…
👉 I demand that…

🔧 How Do You Form the Subjunctive?

Here’s the most important rule:

In the subjunctive, the verb always stays in its base form – no matter what the subject is.

That means you don’t add -s in the third person singular like you normally would in the present simple.

✅ Examples with Different Subjects:

SubjectRegular PresentSubjunctive Form
II goI suggest that I go
YouYou goI suggest that you go
HeHe goesI suggest that he go
SheShe arrivesIt’s important that she arrive
WeWe studyThey recommend that we study
TheyThey finishI ask that they finish

As you can see, the verb stays in its base form — even for he or she — which is different from what we usually do in English grammar!

🧪 Common Uses of the Subjunctive

💡 Suggestions

I suggest that he study harder.
(We don’t say “studies” here — we keep it as study.)

💡 Recommendations

The doctor recommends that you take this medicine daily.
(Again, no takes — just take.)

💡 Importance or Necessity

It’s essential that she arrive on time.
(Not arrives — we use arrive.)

💡 Demands or Strong Requests

I demand that he apologize.
(Not apologizes — we keep apologize.)

❗What About the Verb “To Be”?

“To be” is a little special. In subjunctive sentences, we always use be — again, no change for the subject.

It’s important that he be here on time.
They requested that she be more respectful.
I suggest that you be patient.

Even for he, she, or it, we don’t use “is” — we use be.

🔁 Common Sentence Pattern:

csharpCopyEdit[Expression of suggestion/importance] + that + subject + base verb

Example:
I suggest that she leave early.
It’s necessary that he take action now.
They insisted that we stay until the end.

🧠 Quick Recap

  • Use the base form of the verb (no s, no past tense) in subjunctive sentences.
  • Common after verbs like suggest, recommend, demand, insist.
  • Use “be” instead of am/is/are for all subjects.
  • It’s more common in formal or written English, but it helps you sound more precise and fluent.
